Emerson Middle School Gymnasium
Los Angeles Unified School District
Los Angeles, California
The 19,420 square-foot project added a gymnasium, locker facilities, music room and a dance/aerobic classroom, as well as ancillary spaces such as ticketing, and coach offices, with turf field and courts and an upgraded existing entrance for ADA outside.
The existing campus is an early work of Richard Neutra, notable for its machine-like efficiency and standardization of elements. Therefore the siting was very important and included holding back the front line to preserve landscape and not overshadow existing buildings, utilizing a mass to balance the front elevation with the adjacent auditorium, connecting the building to a single entry point, keeping all program at playground level for easy supervision.
This project is pursuing CHPS certification and integrated sustainable best practices using daylighting, a cool roof system, water efficient fixtures, and certified wood.
