Sustainable Architecture: Civic and Public:
Fox Theater (Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox), Spokane Symphony - Spokane, Washington: Originally completed in 1931, the Fox Theater was home to a variety of entertainment. Time and years of use had taken their toll on the theater, and in 2000 it was closed and slated for demolition with the land destined to become a parking lot. The Spokane Symphony and other Spokane visionaries saw the value of the Fox Theater and launched a successful campaign to save it as a performing arts facility. Adaptive reuse of an existing structure is an important tenet of sustainable design. Throughout the restoration process, most elements were refurbished and reused, consistent with historical restoration requirements and significantly reducing potential waste. In addition, insulation was added to the roof and exterior walls where possible. Single-glazed windows were replaced by new insulated windows with custom, thermally broken frames that matched the profile of the original windows. A new energy-efficient mechanical system was installed, so combined with the upgrades to the exterior envelope, the building’s energy performance was significantly improved. Ultimately, not only was an art-deco treasure saved from the wrecking ball, but the Fox Theater became a catalyst for additional sustainable restoration projects in a newly thriving arts and entertainment district in downtown Spokane.
