Sustainability: Higher Education Projects:
sn-w’ey’-mn Building
, Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane, Washington The sn-w’ey’-mn Building, housing the Social Science and Business programs, is the first building in the Washington Community College/Technical College system to be certified LEED Gold. Located on the west façade, the two-story double thermal wall is the exterior expression of two floors of vertically stacked classrooms. The floor-to-ceiling thermal buffer wall contains louvered blinds controlled by occupancy, daylighting and exterior climate sensors that continually adjust to maximize daylighting, minimize glare and reduce the demands on HVAC equipment. The thermal wall creates learning lanterns that visually connect the classrooms to the heart of the campus while providing students within the classrooms an opportunity to see a building interact with the exterior climactic conditions.
Science and Mathematics Building
, Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane, Washington: The new Science and Mathematics Building at Spokane Community College communicates with the building's users, asking for their assistance to maximize energy efficiency. Designed to meet LEED Silver standards, the building integrates a system of lights in the corridors to inform the users about outside weather conditions and how use of operable windows – available in all the offices and 83% of the classrooms – will affect the energy efficiency of the mechanical system. A red light in the corridors means that open windows will inhibit the mechanical system’s ability to heat or cool the building while a green light in the corridors means that open windows will assist in heating or cooling the building, leading to greater energy efficiency.
