Sustainable Architecture: Residential, Continuing Care Communities:
Echo Glen Children's Center Cottage Renovation
, Snoqualmie, Washington: The Echo Glen project was undertaken to remodel and upgrade 40-year-old residential units to today’s juvenile rehabilitation standards. Site disturbance was minimized to protect the surrounding forest environment. Excavated soil was utilized to reclaim an abandoned sewage lagoon, and runoff from remaining and new impervious surfaces was dispersed by spreader weirs to filter through surrounding forest duff in sheet-flow fashion, nurturing existing wetlands that naturally buffer drainage into the adjacent trout stream. At least 75% of the existing building shells was preserved and over 75% of construction debris recycled. Indoor environmental quality was preserved and enhanced with daylight and views available to all spaces except toilet rooms, low-emission finishes, acoustical treatments and automated solar controls on operable clerestory windows. With energy savings anticipated to be around 15% compared to a conventional building, the project is registered with USGBC to receive LEED Silver certification.
