The process for expansion of the City of Lynnwood’s recreation facilities included several public meetings, evaluation of potential sites, a market analysis, development of program and building options, and a business plan for the proposed concepts. The preferred concept proposed expansion in two phases addressing complex site planning issues to coordinate with an adjacent stream and other existing buildings on Lynnwood’s civic campus. The first phase was a complete renovation of the existing facility with expanded exercise/fitness space and a new leisure pool.

Pool amenities include a zero-depth entry, water slides, a lazy river and support facilities. The entry experience at the existing facility was enhanced and the existing locker rooms were renovated, with family locker rooms included. Lynnwood’s unique removable canvas roof over the pool that has been problematic for years was replaced with a permanent operable system that preserves the pool’s existing structure and its dramatic indoor-outdoor character.
The facility served about 10,000 visitors per week in its first summer. Two weeks before the grand opening, the facility had made $30,000 in annual pass sales and $16,750 in pool and room rentals without significant advertising. The project is certified LEED Silver, and the design includes strategies for water and energy conservation with the pool filtration and HVAC systems.
