People's Community Center New Aquatic Facility
City of Tacoma, Washington
The People's Community Center has been an important asset to the Hilltop Community for decades, fulfilling the needs of diverse programs and community recreational activities. After the pool was closed due to mechanical and structural issues, the community advocated strongly for a new facility. NAC Architecture worked with the City, Metro Parks and a community group throughout the design to restore and enhance this community asset with additional area and new features that are widely supported by the neighborhood.
The new pool is L-shaped with a sprayground, a shallow play area and a current channel in one leg of the L. The sprayground and shallow area are designed to encourage younger children to learn to swim, while the nearby bench nestled between the passive area and spray pad provides seating for parents and families to socialize and observe. The current channel can be programmed for recreation, therapeutic assisted water walking or resistance strength training. Deeper water occurs in the opposite leg of the L and can be used for water aerobics, fitness swimming in the three 25-yard lap lanes or other deeper water recreational activities.
