Dani's Place: Residential Rehabilitation Facility

Toledo, Ohio

Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Lucas County

Dani’s Place is a tribute to a daughter whose battle with mental illness led her parents and friends to fulfill her dream of creating a haven of hope for those recovering from the challenges of mental health. As a supportive village, Dani’s Place is infused with warmth, care, security, and compassion for those in need of healing and restoration.

From NAC’s first interactions with project leadership, the mission was clear: develop a new type of facility offering specialized residential care for adults to continue healing after hospitalization. Treatment would be tailored to support long-term recovery in an environment providing a sense of dignity and belonging. Dani’s Place would also counter the stigma associated with seeking care by becoming a recognized center for mental health education and outreach.

Set in a serene landscape, this village-like community offers a stepping-stone in a healing journey. Immersing residents in the curative power of nature, a tranquil courtyard sits at the heart of the experience with broad windows throughout delivering panoramic views of the surrounding bucolic meadows.

Three residential wings and two administrative/support wings all radiate from a central living space. The angled pitch roofs and warm wood-toned walls of the residential wings evoke a homey coziness, while the windows, arranged in varying patterns, highlight each resident’s individuality. The administrative wings create a security and privacy buffer where the site interfaces with the public along a main road.

Development of Dani’s place is being led by the Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Lucas County, Ohio with support from NAMI Ohio, Ohio MHAS, and 33 Forever—a nonprofit founded by Dani’s parents and friends to raise awareness and inspire action promoting mental health and well-being.
